Arrivé à Salernes en Provence en mai 1968, Alain VAGH a vingt ans et une passion pour la céramique et la vie au naturel.
Pour le conforter dans son audace, il y a Jacotte, sa femme. Elle, est du pays. Lui, quoique né à Toulouse, vient de la plaine hongroise par son père, Tim, fils de Maurice VAGH WEINMANN, une drôle de lignée d’artistes peintres.
D’abord l’apprentissage, les tomettes que l’on engobe, sèchent naturellement au soleil, puis le four à bois, avec ses quinze jours et ses quinze nuits de cuisson, et l’émaillage, la recherche des formes, des couleurs, la naissance de toutes les pièces céramiques.
Simultanément, des rencontres : Max Ernst, Tobas et ses copains de l’école de Nice, Fred Sourdive et J. A. Perrier, les sages de la céramique, et aussi des décorateurs, des architectes qui lui ont fait confiance, tel Albert Caviezel, qui lui a permis de réaliser des milliers de mètres carrés à Engelberg en Suisse, de même des chantiers aux Etats-Unis, au Japon, au Canada...
Alain VAGH, riche de tous ces contacts et réalisations, tout en conservant les bases d’une production de terre cuite traditionnelle y adjoint des créations pures «les petits pavés», ces drôles de petits trapèzes qui tournent, grimpent, ondulent et qui forment des soleils qui s’entrecroisent, se mélangent avec bonheur. Il crée aussi des carreaux estampés en relief, cloisonnés, pleins d’humour et de couleurs.
Puis, il y a des clins d’œil, la voiture, le bateau, la vespa, le vélo,... en céramique. Mais aussi incroyablement technique, avec toutes ces pièces spéciales : cornière, talon, corniche, demi rond, quart de rond, sorties tout droit de sa production et qui démontrent par là l’immense créativité que permettent ses céramiques.
